ID No : | 251 Edit | Title: | Logistical Implications of Water Extraction from Near-Earth Asteroids |
Summary / Review : |
Asteroid-derived raw water is used as rocket propellant in a simple "steam rocket" using a high temperature solar oven (or nuclear reactor). This highly reputable author performs an analysis that shows mass payback ratios of 50:1 to over 100:1 for delivery to Earth orbit. This basic technology is feasible only with asteroids due to their miniscule gravitystrength for soft landings and takeoffs. Sample missions to known asteroid 1977 VA are putforth. Fleets of small, reusable vehicles are suggested. - MP
